Themes and Narrative
RPG, Role playing game, is definitely a storytelling game. Everybody who plays RPG as a storyteller and each person is an actor. How to play this game is, just make your own character, and you can “be” that character in the game’s scenario. Not all of the games are about fantasy, but the most popular one is fantasy, so maybe I can talk more about it. The game always has a master. Master of the game is the person who describes the scene and various characters to the other players. They will say something like “You enter the great throne room and you see before you the storm giant king sitting on his throne, what do you do?”
RPG dice is the most important tool to decide what will happen in those moments of question, are you going to succeed or fail. It is in that space between rolling the dice, describing what your character is doing, the Game Master deciding what it is that / then happens, that is really where the magic happens because it is there that a story comes to life that no one expected.
I just want to show the simple example how it works, generally, we use a 20-sided dice and it usually works in this way: Let’s suppose that this wizard character is your character. When we use a 20-sided dice, just called it d20 in short, in a game, then all of your character’s abilities should be set from number 1 to 20. If your character’s ability is close to number 20, that means you have a great skill in that section. For this character, the strength is 10, intelligence is 15, and education is 20.
Also just suppose that we go into a cave and find something like King Arthur's sword in there. If the Game Master asks you like “Do you use your strength to pull this sword out?” and you answer "Yes.", then you need to roll the dice to determine whether this attempt will succeed or not. This character's strength is 10, so when you get a number less than 10, that means you succeed in pulling out the sword. But a higher number than 10 indicates that you failed to pull the sword out. Also, a number which is close to number 1 means “You have a great success”, and a number which is close to number 10 means “You barely succeeded”. Hard success might make the shape of the sword is not entirely intact, or your character can have additional injuries or disadvantages because all of your powers are used to pull the sword out. Perhaps this is the details that the Game Master decides, anyway. Just like this way, the results of the dice help create all the scenarios.
